Kadar gre za oblačila, obutev in styling, črna barva se najpogosteje psihološko zaznava kot izraz privlačnosti, inteligence in visoke samozavesti. Domnevno čez 66 % žena črno barvo na moškem šteje za izjemno seksi. Črnina se seveda povezuje tudi s pogrebi in smrtjo. Črna barva torej v zahodnih kulturah izziva tako pozitivna kot negativna čustva. Odtenke črne barve imenujemo tudi barva črnila, oglja, temna, zatemnjena in oniks. Siva barva je hladna in nevtralna barva. Siva barva predstavlja barvo brez občutkov, formalno, konzervativno in zelo prefinjeno barvo. Pogosto se uporablja tudi v kontekstu umazanosti, dolgočasja in depresije. Temno siva barva komunicira moč in misterioznost črne. Svetlo siva barva je po naravi ženstvena, dokler je temno siva bolj moževna. Pravzaprav gre za odtenke črne barve. Sivo pogosto imenujemo tudi barva svinca, kovine, smodnika. Odtenki, kot so npr. sivkasti, lahko pri ljudeh povzročijo nelagodje in to je treba upoštevati pri izbiri oblačil.
